Diversion Icon Mike Nichols Has Died at Age 83

Mike Nichols, the diversion symbol and spouse of ABC News Anchor Diane Sawyer, passed on all of a sudden Wednesday at 83 years old.

Nichols' demise was proclaimed in an announcement by ABC News President James Goldston.

"He was a genuine visionary, winning the most elevated respects in expressions of the human experience for his act as an issue, author, maker and comic and was one of a little few to win the EGOT-an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony in his lifetime," Goldston said in the announcement.

"Nobody was more enthusiastic about his specialty than Mike."

Nichols was conceived in Germany in 1931, and went to the United States when he was 7 years of age, when his family got away Nazi Germany. He touched base in America talking little English, yet his energy for his new nation never melted away.

He moved on from the Walden School in New York City, and started seeking after theater while going to the University of Chicago in the early 1950s. While considering pharmaceutical, he discovered his actual calling – parody. He joined a parody troupe in Chicago and collaborated with entertainer Elaine May. The twosome picked up national notoriety together, establishing their association as America's imaginative parody team.

Yet Nichols produced his legacy as an issue, helming hits on Broadway and the silver screen – from "Unshod in the Park" and "The Odd Couple" to "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and "The Graduate." He earned the Oscar for best chief for "The Graduate."

His unparalleled vocation, which extended a half-century, included such triumphs as "Sex," "Working Girl," "The Birdcage" and "Closer." He earned his eighth Tony two years prior for his restoration of "Death of a Salesman."

He had as of late been dealing with a venture for HBO to adjust "Expert Class," Terrence Mcnally's Tony Award-winning play about musical drama legend Maria Callas. The venture would have rejoined him with regular associate Meryl Streep.

Nichols is made due by his wife, youngsters Daisy, Max and Jenny, and four grandchild
